[paranoia] strange noises

Hi,

When I try to use cdparanoia I get strange noises coming from my sound 
card.  It rips fine and the ripped file sounds just fine.  It seems to 
happen as soon as cdparanoia accesses my dvd drive.  Then, the only way 
I can get the sound to stop is by rebooting my computer.

The sound happens even when I do

cdparanoia -Q

then of course, I have to reboot to get the awful sound to stop.

Like I said before, the actual ripped file doesn't contain this sound.

Any ideas?

Oh, and I'm using cdparanoia version 9.8-11 and RedHat 8.0 on kernel 
version 2.4.18-18.8.0.
