I'm not sure if this is the problem, or even any problem. If I boot with
no removable drive in my swapable bay I wind up with a CD-RW as slave w/o
a master, and I don't recall any problem ever. I'm positive I use it to
read data CDs and burn CDs, I can't swear that I have done a rip (I do
very few) but it seems likely, since I only plug in a drive for testing or
full system backup.
Doing this on the first cable can confuse some BIOS versions, since they
feel a need to boot off of "C drive" every time, but I wouldn't expect a
problem with hdd and no hdc.
