I do, in fact, get a "V"... I've also had the machine just freeze (with loss
of keyboard and mouse control and unable to telnet in) so I've had to
reboot... suggestions appreciated.

The error means some transaction was aborted, but the subcategory
number is in the vendor specific range (as the error above correctly
states).  If you get an unrecoverable error that cdparanoia can't fix,
you'll see a 'V', otherwise you need not worry too much.
