How about using a different 'niceness' level of the process?

nice +10 cdparanoia ...

This could be a bad idea if cdparanoia relies on getting info on a certain
schedule, but I don't think it does.  It could also cause your  system to miss
information on one rotation and need to wait for the CD to rotate around again
to read the information.  This would make it take longer to extract the tracks.
2-6 times longer, perhaps?
