To whom it may MONTY concern:
I've been through the FAQ, troubleshoot list and (all three (!))
mail archives to no avail. Hope someone can help.
System:
Asus A7M266 mobo
Athlon 1.2Ghz
IDE1M 40G Maxtor HDD
IDE1S empty
IDE2M Creative CDRW 8-4-32
IDE2S empty
SuSE 7.2 Pro (kernel 2.4.4-4GB (vanilla distro kernel))
I am running ide-scsi emulation, and have no reason (other than
the bug I'm about to describe) to believe that it's not working
perfectly.
I started off trying to rip a whole disc. However, I noticed
that at a certain sector, cdparanoia would get stuck. The drive
was spinning (and its busy light was flashing), but the ripped
sector count had stopped increasing, and drive was making seeking
sounds, like CDP had hit an error and was trying to re-read. The
status smiley was switching between :-0 and :-P. I let it sit
like this for three or four minutes before hitting ctrl-c.
I recalled the command and tried again. Same thing.
I then tried ripping only the track with the Sector Of Death.
Again, CDP did fine, zipping right along until it hit a brick
wall on that particular sector.
Running with -v, I found that a string of the following errors
occurred just before the hang:
scsi_read underrun: pos=176735 len=13 read=9 retry=0
sending SG SCSI reset... FAILED: EBUSY
Nothing has ever shown up in /var/log/messages.
This same problem also occurred on two other discs (I've only
tried ripping these three so far).
Messing with the -o and -S switches did not help. I tried 10,
20, 40, 75 and 1 with -o. I tried 32 and 1 with -S, although I
think I read elsewhere on xiph.org that -S is a no-op with
ide-scsi.
After exhausting the xiph.org resources, I decided to compose
this bug report. I fired up CDP one more time and teed the
output (attached below) while writing this note. Naturally, it
extracted the track successfully for the first time. I still got
the slew of scsi_read underruns, but it didn't hang. As a guy I
work with says, "Bugs are cognizant of the presence of an
expert."
