[paranoia] cdparanoia, '-e' switch, and smiley faces

I am trying to write up a wrapper in perlTk for cdparanoia and my
favorite mp3 encoder (currently xing and notlame).

I'm trying to use the -e switch on cdparanoia and noticed you can't seem
to get to the smiley faces, you just get the read/write/verify/overlap
status.

Is there a way to re-generate the progress state (<space>,'-','+'. etc)
and/or the smiley faces from the -e stream?

If anyone can tell me how, that'd be great. I don't want to loose those
nice status indicators.

Thanks
  -Bruce
