[paranoia] failure at certain sector

I have a CD I'm trying to rip with cdparanoia III release 9.7 (December 13,
1999), and it dies at a certain sector and won't rip anything past it. The
progressbar just gives constant "V" marks, with the smiley going through
painful-looking 8-| :-P contortions.

I've had the same problem with this disc on plextor PX-R820T SCSI drive and
an ASUS 40x IDE drive, at the same place on the disc.

Does anyone know what might be causing this, and if I can fix it somehow?
The disc, FWIW, is Mos Def - Black on Both Sides.
