[paranoia] Newbie User - Can't read CD

Hi,

I'm trying to rip with cdparanoia from a GCD-R542B drive, I believe it is a Goldstar drive, fairly old. First I tried generic ATAPI, but I was getting repeated "packet command error x54". After reading some of the documentation, I recompiled my kernel with ide-scsi emulation.

I'm pretty sure the emulation works fine, because I can mount and read from a cd (from /dev/scd0), but cdparanoia can't read from it.

I'm beginning to think that this device isn't supported, but it is a generic ATAPI device (doesn't have a proprietary controller) and isn't on the short list of unsupported drives.

any hints appreciated.....I don't mind buying a new drive if thats the problem, and I really *don't* feel like ripping under windows (I'd hate to say I found something that windows could do that linux could *not* :))

Regards,
