[paranoia] cdparanoia fails to open CD

I had cdparanoia installed and working on my RH5.2 system. After
upgrading to 6.1 I get:

Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom...
Testing /dev/cdrom for cooked ioctl() interface
/dev/scd0 is not a cooked ioctl CDROM.
        Testing /dev/cdrom for SCSI interface
Could not access device /dev/scd0: Wrong medium type

After playing around some, I realized that the open(device, O_RDONLY)
fails, even though I run this as root.

The SCSI adapter is an Adaptec AIC-7890, and the CD-ROM is
(scsi0:0:1:0) Synchronous at 20.0 Mbyte/sec, offset 16.
  Vendor: TOSHIBA Model: CD-ROM XM-6401TA Rev: 1009
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

I do have the sg device defined in the kernel.

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be welcome!

Thanks,

Michael
