But that's because I used shallow clones!

Works OK without the "--depth 1".

$ cat package_version | grep "PACKAGE_VERSION"
PACKAGE_VERSION="1.1-beta-24-ga32fa31"

$ cat package_version | grep "PACKAGE_VERSION"
PACKAGE_VERSION="0.1.7-9-g4d0df2b"
