It seems to me that the issue of what is encoded on a channel is 
orthagonal to how it's encoded. Any format that could store four 
channels of data could store the WXYZ ambisonic format, but you need a 
way to tag the channels as being vector components and not audio as 
we're used to thinking of it. In addition, there's no real way to 
specify whether channel 0 is a stereo left channel or a left front 
surround or LFE, for instance. I remember having to deal with a similar 
issue for some OpenSoundSystem (OSS) mixers I was working with on 
Solaris a while back. So it might be useful to come up with an extra 
"comment" page in the format that describes each channel in the stream.
