this sound very strange to me as the auth system does not interact with
the logging.

My guess here would be that it is something unrelated such as a bad
firewall, load balancer, or reverse proxy.

Maybe you want to check for that. You can also use netstat or similar
tools to see where the connections to Icecast originate from.
