I have a macOS application that takes audio in from an external mixer, and uses Apple core audio to process. I want to add a live streaming feature to an Icecast server. Is there any Swift API examples. I just want a basic API that will take the core audio and stream it out to an Icecast service. In my endeavors to find this, I have found the dark ice source code. But there are many things in this code that I just don?t need or want. I just need to know how to wrap the audio and what chunks to give to you. No. Probably best is to use libshout, note that you still need to encode the stream, libshout does not take care of that. > > In my endeavors to find this, I have found the dark ice source code. > But there are many things in this code that I just don?t need or > want. However my goal is to incorporate the functionally of just the streaming audio to icecast inside of my own audio application that I am using. This will be so I can have one application running. This should not be a big limitation as most users will not rely on the web interface to link users to their streams, but will manually place links on e.g. their website and thus have full control over it. Also note that listing HTTPS streams is currently *not* supported on dir.xiph.org. If you want to list there, your primary (first in order in the config file) listen socket *must* be HTTP. > How can I correct this? > I'd suggest to ignore those URLs on the status interface and just use manual links (see above). If you want working URLs on your web interface, then you can reorder the 'listen-socket' tags and put a non-TLS port first. The web interface will then link to that, while everything will remain available over TLS too. > Also, the documentation > (https://icecast.org/docs/icecast-trunk/config_file/) says the tag for > a TLS connection is , but I could never get that to work.? I'd like to know how many listeners we've had (from start to finish). After reading through the definitions, it looks like the *Listener-Connections* statistic is the one I want. My question is, *what exactly counts as a listener connection?* For instance, if I have turned off the source from which I'm streaming, but then someone still tries to go to that IP address, will it be counted? (I actually just tried this, and yes, it does still continue to count). The reason I'm asking is that it seems like the number is a little higher than what I'd of suspected it to be. Not to say that it's wrong, I'm just trying to make sure I've got it right. What I ultimately want to know is how many times has someone actually gotten to connect and listen to what I'm streaming. If you are just a user of a server, then you have to contact the party hosting the server and discuss things with them. There is not much you could do yourself, if you have the same problem as Christopher. You could manually evict clients from the stream using the per-mount admin functionality, but if they reconnect automatically, this will be an exercise in futility. This sounds like you are mixing up terms a bit, so it's not easy to understand. A quick reiteration though: The 'main'/'origin'/'master' server will only see *one* connection per downstream relay node. Relay nodes make a HTTP request to the origin server and look just like any other listener client. You can most of the time tell by their User Agent string though. There are several approaches: playlist.log ? on each metadata update it will log the currently connected number of clients along with basic metadata. Log analysis ? webalizer and such. Also Matomo (formerly Piwik) can ingest Icecast logfiles for analysis. Graphing solutions ? Munin, etc., there are multiple plugins url-authentication hooks ? you get hook request on every connect/disconnect and such You didn't specify what sort of numbers you need, so I'm keeping this high level at this point. You much more likely run out of network connection than CPU power. Distributing threads to CPUs and their cores is in the domain of the operating system. Note to the list: Icecast's threading model is irrelevant for most stations, that is stations with less than, let's say, 10k concurrent listeners. If you have more listeners you should seek the help of a professional anyway. (I > actually just tried this, and yes, it does still continue to count). There are many diffrent counters, two of them are the listeners and clients counters. They come in two flavors: current connections and accumulative connections (this is what you want). As client is everything considered that connects to Icecast and sends a HTTP request. This includes requests that Icecast can not reply to positively such as File not found errors. Listeners are actually clients that pull a stream off a source. All listeners are clients but not all clients are listeners. Other examples of clients are e.g. requests to the web admin interface. Listeners are only defined for sources and only for as long as the source is connected. > The reason I'm asking is that it seems like the number is a little higher > than what I'd of suspected it to be. Not to say that it's wrong, I'm just > trying to make sure I've got it right. This can be correct. E.g. some browsers and some smartphones make useless parallel requests. (We do not know why they do that, however it's not needed and likely a misunderstanding or incorrect implementation of the standards.) Such user agents may therefore make multiple listener connects and therefore are counted multiple times. This is not a Icecast problem. It's a bug in the user agents. You can check with your access.log. Such clients would be reported at least two accesses at about the same time. Notes: * The accesslog entry is written when the client is disconnected as only after disconnect all the log information are known to Icecast. * The last value in the access.log is the time on how long the client is connected. It might be useful to keep that in mind when debugging. > What I ultimately want to know is how many times has someone actually > gotten to connect and listen to what I'm streaming. Yes, this is a very common problem. However it depends on how you define "someone". Beside this user agent misbehavior there are also other questions such as, what happens if a client reconnects because of connection loss. Is it a new listener or is it still the same one? Ogg supports proper metadata and doesn't rely on blunt injection into the bit-stream. This doesn't change behavior, it's just ignored. > When my source client reconnects, the media player is moved mack to the > right mount point but the media players I have tried (mplayer and VLC) > keep playing the fallback. I took a look at your actual stream content. The fallback looks like it is coming from a static file containing one Ogg stream. At least that's my guess why the fallback is coming in at 20x the bandwidth of the mount, while both seem to be averaging 32kbit codec bitrate. This poses several potential problems out of which you are experiencing at least one: * Fallback to file should be considered last resort and only used for minimal amounts of time. Seconds at most. Icecast does not do any special bandwidth limiting while serving out files, that means that in the 'worst case' you might be feeding the client data at up to a million times the actual bitrate. This can lead to problems like the client being overwhelmed and dropping (rare/unlikely/broken), the client caching at incoming rate and blowing up in memory, the client filling its cache that's potentially several megabytes in size, etc. The last named case is likely your problem, the player now contains potentially minutes or hours of fallback 'stream' data and will take a *really* long time to reach the data from the actual mount and start playing that back (it's FIFO). * As a single Ogg 'element' there is ever only one 'serialnumber'. Most players can deal with this, but some will throw errors or stop playback. opusdec for example says: `Error: Apparent chaining without changing serial number (1603481952==1603481952).` I'd suggest to have a file that contains *two* chain elements with different serial numbers. This way they will alternate and thus sidestep the problem. In general we highly recommend to use *actual* streams as fallback. It can be something really simple that is just sending out pre-encoded concatenated data at codec bitrate (think IceS2 in case of Vorbis). Again ideally at least two serial numbers should occur to avoid client problems (e.g. two *different* files, *not* copies of the same file!) > Is this because of my source client (liquidsoap), icecast or the media > players? > I think I noticed some message in mplayer about mime type or something. As outlined above it's a bit of a compound problem, but it can be addressed completely on the server/source side. Icecast is not a player, but a stream aggregator platform. To do what you're looking for, you'd need a player capable of generating some sort of action (run a script, raise an SNMP trap, etc) when a 'silence' condition is detected. One player that can do this is GlassPlayer ( https://github.com/RadioFreeAsia/GlassPlayer). You'd also need a fair amount of site-specific administrative 'plumbing' to make that silence alarm do something useful --e.g. start a backup encoder instance, send a warning text to support people, etc. Cheers! |---------------------------------------------------------------------| | Frederick F. If it's controlled by systemd, you probably want to add "LimitNOFILE=50000" to icecast's .service file. If it's the .deb produced by Xiph (which doesn't have a .service file), you'll probably want to edit /etc/init.d/icecast2 (or /etc/default/icecast2) and add prlimit --pid $$ --nofile=50000 to it. -- Paul Martin From mvandop at xs4all.nl Mon Mar 25 07:41:33 2019 From: mvandop at xs4all.nl (Michel van Dop) Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2019 08:41:33 +0100 Subject: [Icecast] Maximum Listeners. Regarding your question, It will be your 'Stream Name' as configured in the source client. Unless you override it explicitly for the mount in your server config. Before you look for your stream in the directory you should verify in the error.log that you don't receive error messages back from the directory on initial stream listing and subsequent metadata updates. Also your hostname is not set to a hostname but an IP. You also set max clients to 5000. Which is fine for Icecast. However your OS may add additional restrictions. There are many educational resources on the Internet that can help you. I am sorry, but I can't point one specific out as I don't fully understand your needs. It might be best if you could find someone knowledgeable locally to help you learn those concepts. Please note that I have provided specific answers in context of each of your questions. You need either of these: * your personal machine MUST be reachable from the public Internet ? By default this is NOT the case for most private internet connections. ? At the very least you would need to reconfigure a NAT-router. * an Internet exposed server (e.g. in the cloud) Setting either up is out of scope of this mailing list. We focus strictly on Icecast, the server software. > On Fri, Mar 29, 2019 at 2:23 PM Prince Naryk > > > wrote: > > hi, > im so sorry i made you confuse, > > ?lets make things simple, > ?i will attach here my config file (the passwords are the default > for now). > As I tried to point out before, this is NOT simple. Most of your trouble is with things that are not Icecast. For 'streaming to the internet' (and listing on YP) you MUST provide: * A publicly reachable TCP port (IPv6 and or IPv4) ? Please note that RFC1918 is NOT public (192.168..; 10...; 172.16-31..) ? Neither is RFC 6598 - 100.64... * A world wide resolvable DNS entry for the IP address(es) involved above ? Technically this is optional, but we STRONGLY recommend it. This mailing list will NOT help you with either of those two. You MUST provide this by yourself. If you need help with this, PLEASE seek it elsewhere. PLEASE do not attempt to discuss it on this list (request to all subscribers reading this). > and see if this configuration will now work over the internet and > can be heard publicly, > I only change the hostname, also please check it if it's the > correct one. > As already pointed out in my last email this will NOT work with YP in the current form. I won't comment further. Please ensure the above mentioned prerequisites are in place before you try this again. Thomas PS: For other mailing list subscribers playing along at home: The RFC 1918/6598 network notation is intentionally wrong for simplicity and to avoid further confusion. > > > thanks for your kind consideration. > > > On Fri, Mar 29, 2019 at 2:06 PM Thomas B. URL: From tasviv at gmail.com Sun Mar 31 09:55:43 2019 From: tasviv at gmail.com (Tasos Kotaras) Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2019 12:55:43 +0300 Subject: [Icecast] mountpoint configuration beyond the basics? Message-ID: Hello, I'm new to icecast, but in few time I setup a streaming system using a raspberry pi as stream source through darkice towards my icecast server. All seemed fine with the basic mountpoint configuration, but when I tried to try some of the more "advanced" features I failed badly. More specifically: 1. I tried to force a failback mountpoint like this: /snd/test-fallback.mp3 1 1 but is not triggered. Similarly with , but this is not as important. According to the documentation, this mountpoint could just be a file, and this is what the above mp3 is. This one is situated in the web/snd directory, but I also tried other positions, even absolute directory path (that I guess is totally irrelevant). Now, If I "hit" this file from the URL http://...:8000/snd/...mp3 it is perfectly heard.? If for some reason the stream source is down and I refresh the icecast URL, I get 404, instead of the failback stream. 2. A grave consequence of the above (if not something else) I cannot restore a temporarily interrupted stream. If darkice fails at some point, then sound stops at icecast (expected) but when the stream is back, icecast does not continue broadcasting. It requires a browser refresh to do so. Not even pressing the "play" is not good enough, as it plays from the cache. 3. I would like to have a record of who and when connected/disconnected, so I obviously tried these: /root/icecast/on-connect.sh /root/icecast/on-disconnect.sh with the same "bad luck". Again, I tried all possible paths, like absolute (as above) or relative to web/, etc. Something tells me that all above are somehow related and have to do with errors in the directory paths. The docs do not help anymore. I spare you from sending the whole configuration (unless you ask), as everything else is working perfectly. What I miss here?
