Hi.  I have a station on SamCast and I?m trying to hook it up to StreamLicensing.   We?re a full week into the post-Live365 era with our new station.  

Streamlicensing told me I need the KH branch of Icecast to license with them.  Help!    I can see where IceCast supports SamCast, but I?m not very technical and can?t figure out what to do to hook up with theHK branch of Icecast.  Any/all help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi all:

 

I am managing a radio station that has 7 streams.

I am using icecast, ices and ezstream on the streams and overall it is
working pretty well.

One of the streams is an old time radio stream and I use ezstream to run the
prerecorded shows.

The streams are 128K mp3 streams.

Also this station is running on a VPS using Ubuntu 14.04.

 

My question:

Is there a package or some sort of way I can apply dynamic compression to
the stream?

The old time radio stream plays many different old time radio shows and the
volume is inconsistent.

 

If you need more information please let me know.

Ezstream really isn't designed for this.  It's primarily meant for 
streaming files as they are, which is a very light-weight operation, with 
the ability to reencode for the case where files aren't at the same 
bitrate/format.

Having said this, if you run it in reencode mode, it should be possible to 
pipe through a compressor like's sox's compand effect on the way to the 
encoder.

If you're running in reencode mode, you should have something like this 
example from the documentation in your config file:

LAME:

             <format>MP3</format>
             <match>.mp3</match>

Thanks Geoff, I will give it a try.

I am reencoding all files to a 128K mp3, 44100 sample rate  stereo stream
for consistency.

So yes I have the decode and encode lines in the xml file as you outlined.

I will check out sox and see how it does.

I am also exploring mp3gain to run across the entire library and see if
getting all files to the same level will help.

With 2.4.x (stable) you can implement something like that using the url
auth system.
With 2.5.x (development) this could be implemented in several ways,
including url auth, client filter auth or a role that is written to
exactly do that.

However I strongly suggest against it. It will likely break security at
some point. E.g. the ISP a friend of mine is using uses 10/8 for
provider infrastructure. So it's part of 'the public net'. Another case
may be the usage of Carrier-grade NAT. What about mixed infrastructure
with 'public' and 'private' IP addresses mixed? This may or may not be
inside depending on your definition. Also what about IPv6? It's not
exactly clearer.

I think a solution would always be to the exact problem. That means that
you need to specify exactly what you call 'inside'.

What is your exact problem? Maybe it's not about the auth itself.

Like there could be a setup with two Icecasts, one bound to the outside
world and one bound to the inside network that just skips the auth step
at all.

When a dj is live of you are running your auto dj you can type your stream url into browser. Once you have done log into administration and that it comes up with listener stats for you.

The page you posted is the stats you get when you log in as an admin, but 
you don't need this much detail.

You can go to http://s2.stationplaylist.com:9290/status.xsl and see a much 
simpler stats page.

However, this also says you have no streams connected, or rather it 
doesn't say that you do have any (which is the same thing unless you have 
hidden streams).

Is this definitely your server address?

The answer is I think so - - -I am new at this.

I am only on the Air Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon until 3pm
local

I have been on the air using icecast since around 1/15/16. I was trying to
access some historical information regarding number of users that have
listened for each show - - -I was trying to access this through admin.

Should I be able to find this information using Icecast admin? - - -thanks
much

If you enabled logging in your icecast.conf, you should be able to find
that in the playlist*.log files on the server. I don't think they are
accessible through the admin web interface.

I installed icecast 2.40 using the standard apt-get install command on
my Debian 8.2 (Weezie) system, but I accidentally chose the incorrect
answer to the dialog asking if I wanted to answer configuration
questions or edit the XML myself. I then removed icecast2 in the
normal 'apt-get remove' manner. I followed this by executing the
install command again. Icecast2 re-installed, but bypassed the
question I really wanted to answer, so I removed it again, but this
time I also removed the /etc/icecast2 directory, /etc/init.d/icecast2
and /etc/logrotate.d/icecast2 manually. I installed a third time,
thinking I now had a clean environment. The installation ran to
completion, but generated an error, exit status 1, from a script that
tried to chmod /etc/icecast2/icecast.xml, which did not get created
during the installation, nor did I get the question asking whether I
wanted to answer sconfig questions or edit it myself. What do I have
to do in order to make the installation ask me the question it
originally did? Or, put another way, what do I have to do to clean up
from the mess I've obviously made and start over?

try to purge the files with
apt-get --purge remove icecast2
This should delete all the icecast files, then install it again.
I don't know if this is supported wit icecast2, but maybe you could
also use dpkg-reconfigure.

I have been trying to access the "artist" and "title" metadata in the xml
files as separate entities, But have found thar artist is missing, and
title contains a combined form.
My source is a modified version of ices-0.4 sending mp3 streams. The
modification is to attach artist and title metadata instead of song, which
seems tobe working, in that both the artist and title are present. What
does shout_set_metadata do? I have tried to use wireshark to see what is
being sent to the server, but it doesn't appear to be anything obvious...

For MP3 streaming metadata ICY is used, which is not capable of having 
separate Artist and Title
metadata bust just one single combined string for metadata, as far as I 
know.
So there is no way to get that information if you use MP3, sorry.

Thanks for the idea.

 

However the radio station is on a remote vps running the linux Ubuntu 14.04
operating system.

 

We use to use another automation package prs but it hasn't been updated in
quite some time and it was becoming unstable and I kept having to reboot the
automation to make it follow the server clock because it kept drifting and
shows were not starting on time.

 

Now I have all of the streams using the ezstream and ices combination along
with Icecast and everything is running much smoother because the prerecorded
shows are being launched from scripts via cron jobs.

 

I am going to try Geoff's suggestion and also I am going to see how well
mp3gain does with the mp3 files we have on the server.

 

I'll let everybody know what I decided to go with.

ices 0.x is no longer supported for more than a decade.
It uses a HTTP based upstream but downstream is ICY as MP3 can not be
transmitted over HTTP with metadata. And ICY's metdata support is broken
all the way.

*Those problems are inherent to MP3 streaming.*

We really recommend not to use MP3 at all. Ogg/Vorbis and Opus don't
have those problems.

The problem is thatthere are still platforms that can't be depended on to

This is not about metadata, just how to connect to the server to 
transmit the stream.
How metadata is handled is different depending on the format, modern 
formats like Ogg
don't need the ICY metadata "hack" to work, but MP3 does not support 
metadata at all
that's why icy metadata is used. If you stream in a format like Ogg with 
a proper
source client, Icecast will display metadata fine, it's just not 
possible with MP3.
