Message-ID: <1380855101.4343.YahooMailAndroidMobile@web162202.mail.bf1.yahoo.com> Hi there, The radio station I program at just got an airtime computer that has the possibility of remote broadcast. I wanted to figure out this technology for future remote broadcasts. I have a laptop with ubuntu linux on it and I was told to download ices to help me connect to the airtime computer. I went to your website www.icecast.org/ices.php And downloaded both files for the ices2. I am somewhat new with linux, I assumed that there would be a set-up file or something. Can you help me with my next steps for installing ices? Thanks! Rob Mckenna Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you are using a VBR (variable bitrate) method, such as the default/recommended encoding method for Ogg Vorbis, the bitrate will be much less during these silent parts. Alternatively, if you're using a CBR (constant bitrate), the bandwidth will be nearly constant regardless of level of sound input, even during silent segments. Neither of these modes have anything to do with Icecast itself, but rather, everything to do with your stream source. -- Libre Video http://librevideo.org From keith at karsites.net Mon Oct 14 18:07:51 2013 From: keith at karsites.net (Keith Roberts) Date: Mon, 14 Oct 2013 19:07:51 +0100 (BST) Subject: [Icecast] Bandwidth Usage In-Reply-To: <525C2C47.1010307@librevideo.org> References: <525C2C47.1010307@librevideo.org> Message-ID: On Mon, 14 Oct 2013, Basil Mohamed Gohar wrote: > To: icecast at xiph.org > From: Basil Mohamed Gohar > Subject: Re: [Icecast] Bandwidth Usage > > On 10/14/2013 12:42 PM, Keith Roberts wrote: >> If there is no sound input on the client audio stream being >> sent to the icecast server does this mean there is no >> bandwidth being used - or does icecast use bandwidth even >> for times when there is no sound on the client input end? >> >> Kind Regards, >> >> Keith Roberts > > That all depends on the method of encoding being used on the > input/source side. OK thanks for that advice Mohamed. So it will be line input audio sine wave into the soundcard, and then use the default VBR to encode the stream to OggV and stream that up to the icecast server? As Mohamed already pointed out it all depdends on what is before your encoder and is not strongly related to icecast. If you are encoding from an anlog source (without some post processing on your system) your stream will likely drop in used *bitrate* but not to zero as the codec will encode the noise from that input. This is true and should work fine with icecast (no strange timeouts and stuff) with Ogg Vorbis which I strongly recommand for most setups. In case of Vorbis I also recommend not to set bitrate or encoder mode, just set the quality value and let the encoder do a good job. (Changing too many parameters will often end in less quality per bitrate). Have a nice day :) -- Philipp. (Rah of PH2) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Besides hosting my own streams I also provide my stream to Radio Reference/Broadcastify to make my stream available to smartphone users. Anyway I have found that if the Broadcastify server goes down it also causes by locally hosted feed to be unavailable. Now this is probably more of a Darkice issue because it is Darkice that has the problem since it encodes the audio and feeds my Icecast server and Broadcastfy (Who I believe is using a version of Icecast) My question is can I set up Icecast as a relay to Broadcastify? I read the short documentation on relaying but I do not understand it completely. As Broadcastify has supplied me with a server, password, and mount point. I seems like I would simply use a single broadcast relay but I see no way to use the password. ? Bellingham Scanner Kicks Ass!! You don't need any password for this, unless the stream needs listener authentication. Icecast just shows up as a regular listener at the other server (in this case Broadcastify). If that doesn't work, then there are other options how to approach this. Give them the full URL, port, and mount name. They are the ones that need to configure the relay. I currently stream multiple live scanner feeds via my own Icecast install, but have Broadcastify relaying only 4 of my feed (the countywide feeds). If you change your Icecast URL, you will need to notify them. If you are using their services strictly to support smart phones, there are other options. You can reach out directly to the author of Scanner Radio app (Gordon Edwards), and see if he can add your feeds to the directory. Using that method, my listeners can find my countywide feeds under Broadcastify and under w2lie.net. All my other feeds appear under the w2lie.net directory. Good luck. 73 Phil / w2lie www.w2lie.net Long Island Live Scanner Feeds and Forums On 10/18/2013 12:16 AM, Bellingham Scanner wrote: > I have been using Icecast to host live police scanner audio, along > with Darkice. I am having a issue with what I am doing wrong here to get listed in the xiph.org public directory. I have the newest icecast-2.3.99.3_beta3, loaded on a Win7 box acting as server, and using BUTT to encode the source at 32kbps, mono, .mp3, from VLC playlists. I have the server config set to public, and have this code in the icecast.xml file: 15 http://dir.xiph.org/cgi-bin/yp-cgi The Server: http://168.103.47.57:8000 The Stream: http://168.103.47.57:8000/stream.mp3 The Website: www.dlradio.org I can never locate our Station in the public listing. Is there something I am missing here? I am curious if need to replace the http://dir.xiph.org/cgi-bin/yp-cgi with "my script to parse our listing information" ?, and if so can someone send me example source? If the logging is set appropriately, you should see the attempt to get listed, and you should definitely see if the attempt fails. The other thing is if you have a mount-specific section of your server config for this mountpoint, check that it's not set to prevent YP listings. Of course, you also need your stream to be public as set on the client, but you've taken care of this. HTH, Geoff.
