While we're certainly welcoming everyone from the AOL/Shoutcast world to
start using Icecast, I'm going to be a bit cautious about the statements
on that page.
All the statements I've read so far only mention "Winamp". Shoutcast has
always been a separate project and from what I remember AOL actually
makes a profit by stream hosting and licensing, as opposed to the
free-as-in-beer Winamp software.

That's one of the risks of a closed source software model, you might be
left with nothing if one component shuts down. In the open source
context you can still take the sources and set up your own directory
server, streaming server, etc.
