[Icecast] audio level data from icecast stream

for an interactive artwork i am trying to get a stream of audio level  
data in any format.

for instance a log could be written very N seconds with the average  
audio level (from -1.00 to 0.00, for example) of the samples since  
last log entry.

any ideas?
