Or are you confusing some things here?

As pointed out in
http://www.icecast.org/docs/icecast-2.3.2/icecast2_config_file.html#mount
the <password>-tag contains "An optional value which will set the 
password that a source must use to connect using this mountpoint.".

Where as an <authentication>-tag would specify "that the named mount 
point will require listener authentication".
