From dtrump1 at triadav.com Tue Jul 1 02:33:06 2008 From: dtrump1 at triadav.com (Dick Trump) Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2008 21:33:06 -0500 Subject: [Icecast] Unexpected shutdown of Icecast Message-ID: <261212974.20080630213306@triadav.com> I've been running 2.2.0 for more than 3 years now on a Win2K system and have had so little trouble with it, I hadn't considered upgrading However it has mysteriously failed a few times. I would get a report that it was down, log in remotely only to find that Icecast was not running. I would restart it, report to the station manager that he or someone must have shut it down, and forget about it. But just now, while doing some other maintenance on the system, I inadvertently shut it down myself and was so astounded that I had to do it again to prove that my action had really made it quit. All I did was press the Escape key when Icecast had focus and it was gone. Is there any good reason for it to shut down like that? I suppose that installing it as a service would take care of it, right? I guess that would give me good reason to finally upgrade. Is there an option on 2.3.2 during installation to install as a service? If not, where would I find instructions? Glad to hear that 2.2.0 has been running well for you. > But just now, while doing some other maintenance on the system, I inadvertently shut it down myself and was so astounded that I had to do it again to prove that my action had really made it quit. > > All I did was press the Escape key when Icecast had focus and it was gone. Is there any good reason for it to shut down like that? maybe oddsock is best to answer that one. Are you saying it's like the stop server button was pressed or that the application completely disappeared. > I suppose that installing it as a service would take care of it, right? I guess that would give me good reason to finally upgrade. running it so that keyboard input is not taken, even minimized should suffice. A 2.3.2 update would certainly be requested. There are many instability fixes since 2.2.0 and in the case of windows there dependent libs have also been updated. > Is there an option on 2.3.2 during installation to install as a service? If not, where would I find instructions? there's a check box at the end of the install process. There is a quirk in windows (yeah I know) wrt services. In some versions you may find that you need a reboot between the removing of a service to installing a new one. I suspect you should be ok with going from 2.2.0 to 2.3.2 without a reboot because the service name is different. karl. Compiled and installed 3.2.3, found a few stilled borked configs with my MPD, and fixed that, and both Icecast (after playing with ownerships that were deleted when I de-yum'ed the icecast RPM from the Fedora repo's) and icecast is working. I will clean up the config to remove some of the things that were mentioned though. Looking at the interface for the new one, I do like it a bit more but I am still looking it over it. I have a question with icecast, though I think it is more something with MPD that I have been wondering. Is it just mpd plugged into it that prevents mp3 streaming or would anyone here know? I use MPD a lot and have had no problems with it at all, I am just looking at getting WMP working with my icecast. It doesn't really like the OGG that is streamed, but once again that may be my own fault. Thanks for the help so far, and I will get this 'complaint' out to the Fedora community to get that package fixed and updated. WMP is reported to work if you have the filters installed although MS don't provide the filters themselves. mp3 streams do work but my last information on this was that variable bitrate MP3 via a stream didn't work in WMP. > Thanks for the help so far, and I will get this 'complaint' out to the > Fedora community to get that package fixed and updated. The mechanism for the actual listening bind was changed so that both ipv6 and ipv4 is listened on so it may been indirectly fixed. All I can say is that it wasn't reported and I do have access to x86_64. The only problem case I'm aware of wrt listening sockets is on some BSD setups. karl. With 2.3.2 I wanted at least the fixes and error case handling in the main release as 2.3.1 has been out for a long time but I did merge in some of the features that had shown to work well. Of course suggestions about what people want see merged is welcome. The tags for dir.xiph.org are needed (they may be commented out). Then you need to make your stream public which is usually a flag set in the source client. BTW You may of already set the above correctly because the url you provided indicates that the setting is wrong, it currently says localhost which is not really a valid name/IP for other internet users to use so the stream directory server will send a message back to you for that which you can see in your error log. karl. Yes. If you create a section for each mountpoint, you can specify a password to use. An example is given in the sample config file. My suggestion is to set your global source password to someting only you know and don't give it to anyone except maybe people you trust as they will be able to make any mountpoint with such a password. Maybe it would be useful to be able to disable this? Anyway, then specify a section for each mountpoint you want to use and give a password in each one. Let me know if you need any further help with this. Geoff. Yes. If you want one password for all encoders (the Icecast default setting) you can amend the following section: hackme In this scenario anyone can create a stream on any mountpoint on your server using this password ('hackme'). If you want to change the password you simply edit between the tags and include a new plain text password. > Because I want to manage the access to the server for every mountpoint > and without give the server's password. Yes, as far as I know that's how it all works. > Because I want to try to modify the icecast.xml dynamically with php. If you add mountpoints to icecast.xml then you will need to force Icecast to re-read the icecast.xml file before the changes take place.
