Our target is to release version 1.0 at the end of June, so the plugin is starting to become quite stable. If you want to play around with the current development version, we maintain the plugin code at: http://svn.annodex.net/liboggplay/trunk Because the plugin (and liboggplay, the library upon which it depends) are in active development, there are still a reasonable number of dependencies to install first. If you are on a debian or ubuntu system, I can recommend Conrad Parker's build script to get these sorted out hassle-free: http://snapper.kfish.org/~conrad/tmp/Makefile.oggplay-autobuild We also maintain a community of developers at #annodex and #theora on irc.freenode.net if you want to come and chat about the project! It's basically a few extra methods in logging.c, some configuration directives added, and a new file mylog.c You have the option of having MySQL Logging in addition to standard file logging, and it can be switched on and off, and authentication can be set in the config.xml I will make up a diff you can patch the icecast-2.3.1 source tree with if you like. Then a quick query like SELECT * FROM `icecastLogs` WHERE `method` = 'SOURCE'; should give you a list of every source connection, and its end date and duration. (startdate is enddate - duration seconds) On a busy busy server this might consume quite a lot of overhead, and possible bring down your mysql server, as I haven't implemented persistent connections. Message-ID: <4672C59F.5050006@stthomasepc.org> I am just starting to experiment with Icecast2. I have a collection of .wav files that I eventually want to stream out as either ogg or mp3. None of the source clients I found could do this type of re-encoding, maybe I just missed one? So I set out writing a shell script to do it for me. I'm having a real tough time getting things to work so I finally decided that maybe I don't have a thorough understanding of what I need to do. I thought it would be as simple as taking my .wav file, passing it through oggenc to encode it, and then redirect that output to the mount point defined in icecast.xml. Is that anywhere near reasonable or is there something more sophisticated going on in the source clients than I thought. Everything _seems_ to be working on the server side but when I try connecting nothing happens. Thanks for any assistance. Icecast listens on a TCP port. You can connect multiple streams. hence a pipe approach would be brain dead. please read the url above and then look at http://www.icecast.org/3rdparty.php for a source client that suites your needs. So I can redirect to icecast like: cat ./my.wav|oggenc - |/usr/bin/icecast but I'm at the mercy of the file system to determine the rate that icecast gets the data stream - correct? No no no. Icecast is a server daemon only. You start it and it runs quietly in the background, waiting for sources and clients to connect. If a client connects to a mount point that a source is connected to, Icecast relays the data sent from the source to the client, starting at the point at which the client connected (minus any buffers that might be active). To send a stream to Icecast, you need a source client. Ices (both versions) is a source client; Ezstream is a source client; The Oddcast DSP plugin for Winamp is a source client. And there are several others listed at icecast.org. One other tool I was looking at was ffmpeg. Not only can it re-encode the stream on the fly, but it can send it at the correct data rate for the encoded stream. Only problem is there isn't much written concerning re-encoding .wav files. Is there any documentation anywhere that I could read to learn how to write my own source client? Something like that might explain a lot. You might want to look at libshout. It's the recommended way to write source clients for Icecast. It handles a lot of the trickiness for you. It's also available at Icecast.org. Cheers, Geoff. I notice when I run it like this though: cat ./file.wav|oggenc -|ezstream -c ./ezstream.conf everything works fine until I get to the end of the file then I start getting endless lines of this: ezstream: streamFile(): Error while reading 'stdin': Bad file descriptor Is this because of the way I'm running ezstream or because I'm cat'ing the input file? I checked the file and it has an EOF in it. I notice if I redirect stdout to /dev/null the errors stop but I have to cancel the program's execution once the song has completed. Also, does someone have a sample script I can use to stream my music along with all the corresponding Metadata? Maybe a configuration file to go with it (I notice the de/encode tags are involved). The ideal would be a black-box hardware solution with an audio input and ethernet interface similar to broadcast studio IP audio links or the network audio capabilities of certain X-terminals. An acceptable solution would be *nix or Win32 software using PC hardware. The closest I've found on the 'Net is the old Ulm WebMedia software from 1997 (win32) but it seems to use a non-standard RTSP implementation that requires a custom player. There is a lot of talk on Java discussion forums about coding this sort of app, but I'd prefer something that did not need the high overhead of a JVM. One could use the CCRTP libraries to build such a program and sample code exists that creates a sender and listener but nothing like a stream server seems to exist. For the moment, I've kludged up a SIP UA to service a few incoming calls in a conference, but that won't scale to a practical number of listeners. The Columbia rtspd would work but does not support GSM or ADPCM without modification; I don't believe that Apple's server does either. All replies are much appreciated. Yes, the application is an online remote- > controlled HF receiver and a DX'er can't tolerate lag in the audio > while tuning. Then icecast is clearly the wrong option. I have used it to live broadcast some QSOs I've made - the listeners of course were non-interactive. DD6VSF also had a RX controlled through a CGI interface that could be tuned in to via icecast. Absolutely sufficient for the occasional enigma check or pileup cross-check. Using something like callweaver or sipX should be a better option then. The signalling can be used to control the RX and also give feedback to the listener connected (current QRG, mode, filter). Conference servers could be used to connect multiple listeners. vy 73 es 55 de Thomas, dm8tbr From r.hussey at hotmail.co.uk Sun Jun 17 17:20:24 2007 From: r.hussey at hotmail.co.uk (Ryan Hussey) Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 18:20:24 +0100 Subject: [Icecast] Traktor-Icecast Message-ID: I have Traktor DJ studio 3.2 how do i get Icecast to work with it because it has totally confused me? I tried omitting the > decode parameter and ezstream complained. I am not an Ezstream expert, but... Ezstream is geared to work with raw PCM data internally. Converting (decoding) to PCM is a relatively cost-free operation, and sox can do it quite nicely with something like: sox -r 44100 -c 2 -t sw - (for outputting to standard output). but if you really insist on not converting from wav to PCM, you would of course need to change the oggenc parameters appropriately, but it could work. To decode you'd simply need something like: cat > > > WAV > .wav > oggenc -r -q 1.5 --resample=44100 -t "@M@" - > > This isn't going to do it. What you've told it to do here is how to *encode* wav files, but you're actually using oggenc to do it so even that won't work. At the very least, you need to tell it how to *decode* wav files and how to encode vorbis files. Perhaps something like the following: WAV .wav sox "@T@" -t sw - sox -t sw -r 44100 -c 2 - -t wav - Vorbis .ogg oggdec -R -o - "@T@" oggenc -r -q 1.5 --resample=44100 -t "@M@" - If you want to skip the wav decode step (not recommended), replace the wav decode line with my "cat" example above (only works on *nix systems I'd think), and take the -R out of the oggenc line. Note that the above is untested. Also, you may be able to get away with not having a wav encoder and an ogg decoder. Presumably the reason why Ezstream was complaining is that you'd told it to play wav files but you didn't tell it how to decode them, only how to encode them. Hope this helps, or is at least roughly right. Geoff. Talks will resume tomorrow and continue through Saturday. The streams are mirrored by a network managed with geodns. Use the URL below and you will be redirected to an appropriate mirror: http://streams.video.debconf.org:8000/ In case you've missed any of the talks from the past 4 days, the archive is coming online as checking of recorded files and transcoding proceeds: http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2007/debconf7/ Note that these encodings have not all been checked. Since we have the raw DV stored to disk we can go back and rework problem files to some degree. If we have to we also have tape from the main camera in each room (not the mixed video) as backup. As you can perhaps imagine, we have a tremendous amount of footage to deal with, what with having as many as 4 tracks running at once. If you have any comments or suggestions on particular files, particularly if there seem to be technical issues with the encoding, please(!) let us know about it on the wiki. There's a good chance we will be able to improve the situation. http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf7/videoteam/RecordingsRemarks -Eric Rz. For the benefit of everybody else, a bit of googling revealed that Raduga is a commercial radio automation package that runs under Windows using DirectX. I'm glad to see that it has Ogg support (presumably Vorbis). It doesn't appear to support streaming natively. Assuming all of the above is correct, you will need another piece of software to encode your audio as a stream and send it to Icecast. There are several which can do the job. I personally recommend Oddcast from www.oddsock.org. I recommend the standalone version as you aren't using Winamp or Foobar to play your music. You will need to configure your soundcard to record the audio it plays. How exactly you will do this will depend a bit on your soundcard. Most cards allow you to do this in software these days. Go into Volume Control. Go to Properties and select your soundcard and "Adjust Volume for Recording". Have a look at the list of available channels and find one that has a name something like "Stereo Mix" or "Wave". Make sure it is checked in the Properties dialog. Click OK and then make sure that the "Select" checkbox next to the channel you just located is checked, and that the slider is set to a moderate level (you may need to fiddle with this slider position in order to get a good volume level on your stream). If for some reason there is no channel for capturing the card output, you may need to use a cable and connect the output of your card to the line in of your card. If you need to do this, and you shouldn't nowadays, be *very* careful that Line is muted in the playback settings of Volume control, otherwise you'll get a very nasty feedback loop. Now you can go into Oddcast and configure it to work with Icecast. Let me know if you have any further questions. Geoff.
