However, the encoder still has to reset itself when the sample rate changes, so you may hear a slight click in the stream just before the crossfade starts (only if the sample rate changes). Hello, First of all I would like to congratulate you this crossfader. I've been thinking of that may times, but I cannot write it myself. Are you planning to port this crossfacer to ices 2 ? The input skip bit is ices preventing itself from Yeah, I'm pretty sure the connection between ices2 and icecast is sh*tty at times. That's not what's bothering me; ices2 giving up after X attempts is. > Send me the ices.log so I can check what led up to the 'Too many > failures' message. I'm attaching the ices2 and icecast logs for the latest incident. Notice the very short lifespan of ices2 in this case. I'm setting up a demo for someone of how to use linux to do net radio broadcasting. The setup I'm thinking of is to use ardour plus jack to mix two (maybe more) input sources (live audio and recorded tracks/programmes), then send the mixed audio to ices2 for streaming to icecast2, using the jackified version of ices2. This is all working OK. The problem is, I'm trying to set it up to use peercast peer to peer streaming, so as to cut down the amount of bandwidth that the server needs. This means every listener needs to have enough bandwidth to relay at least one stream out as well as in. What I was thinking of is to broadcast 2 ogg streams ; one at 64kbps stereo for broadband listeners, and another at 16kbps mono for dialup listeners, and maybe get a few people with good connections to have a permanent peercast relay for both these streams. But as far as I can see, ices2 won't encode at below 32 kbps, which won't work with peercast on 56k dialup links. I remember from the vorbis documentation that it's supposed to work down to 16 kbps per channel, and the old vorbis encoder for linux used to do this, so has something changed in the specification? Specifically, I have a machine with 2 versions of oggenc on it, one from debian woody, and one compiled from source. The woody version will encode mono wavs down to 16kbps, but the (later) hand compiled version will only go down to 32 kbps. The quality of the 16kbps files isn't that great, but it's still ok to listen to - no obvious distortion or spurious noises, just a loss of clarity. If there's any way to get ices2 to encode to 16kbps mono, could someone let me know how? -- Please don't send me html mail or un-notified attachments. The differences are getting more specific now, theora/multi-ogg codec streaming, on-demand relays and client redirection to slave are the big user-visible things left, but there are smaller things that some people may want like the hidden tag mentioned above > When icecast 2.1.0 is eventually released, what code base would be used? The trunk code will be eventually tagged as 2.1, the kh tree has only me making mods/decisions whereas trunk is when things become filtered and agreed with by other developers. I suspect no other big changes are going to happen now before 2.1 but I need to get feedback from other developers before saying for sure. There does need to be some smaller corner-case fixes applied to trunk still. karl. Into config file,it says(it's more on alias section): "In icecast servers prior to the 1.3 release, you could run a icecast server as a relay for another icecast server, simply acting as a client on the other server and serving the local clients .... In icecast 1.3.0 and above, we make this procedure much simpler. If you want to relay a stream from another server, simply add an alias for that server.";exactly what i need. I guess it is also possible with icecast v2,and with other streaming servers that know how to relay. This is usually 44100 for CD quality sound, or sometimes 48000. bitrate is the number of bits/sec in the stream /after/ it's been compressed. I.e. how much of your upload bandwidth is being used. Changing the sample rate affects the quality of the raw, uncompressed audio file/stream (e.g. a wav). bitrate refers to the compressed stream. I.e., a 44100 samples/sec 32 kbps stream and a 44100 samples/sec 128 kbps stream will both decompress to a 44100 samples/sec raw stream, but a 22050 samples/sec 32 kbps stream will decompress to a 22050 samples/sec raw stream. I think the usual thing to do when streaming is leave the sample rate at CD quality, and just bring down the bitrate to reduce the bandwidth. If you're using very low bitrates, you might get better results by downsampling to a lower sample rate. If you want to reduce bandwidth, you could have a look at peer to peer streamers like peercast or streamer (google on the names plus 'peer to peer broadcast'). With these, every listener is also a relay for other listeners, so the broadcasting machine only needs enough bandwidth for 2 or 3 streams. -- http://www.niftybits.ukfsn.org/ remove 'n-u-l-l' to email me. html mail or attachments will go in the spam bin unless notified with [html] or [attachment] in the subject line. If you install the jackified version of ices (http://mediacast1.com/~karl), you could play the mp3 stream in a jack-capable player (e.g. alsaplayer command line version?), then set the output to that to feed into the input of ices. Or you could try playing the stream with mpg123 -s http://url, and pipe this into ices, set up to take pcm input from stdin. You might have to pipe through sox as well to get the format right for ices. -- http://www.niftybits.ukfsn.org/ remove 'n-u-l-l' to email me. html mail or attachments will go in the spam bin unless notified with [html] or [attachment] in the subject line.
