Your best bet is to do what I do with berkman.indy, grab Brendan's
nightly snapshot where all that stuff has already been done for you:
http://www.xiph.org/~brendan/
then just ./configure gmake gmake install
gmake = GNU Make, BSD make doesn't tend to work on non-BSD packages
