I received some recommendations for people where to stay if you're not a local.

The Geary Hotel, on Geary and 11th - is a good inexpensive hotel:

Also, there are some great places on airbnb - if you go on their site, and click the Richmond District, there are about 50 places people can rent.

Finally, there is also Kabuki hotel, which is a short bus or cab ride
away on the 38 and 38L   http://goo.gl/maps/cIzzA .
