"Least amount of compression" means "largest possible file."  
"Uses the least amount of bytes" means "smallest possible file."

Do you really want the largest possible file, even though the smallest 
possible file gives you the exact same quality bit-for-bit?  If so, use 
"--fast".  Or, as others have said, use an uncompressed WAV.  

If you want the smallest possible file, use "--best".
