The *example* only supports 16-bit stereo files.
The FLAC format supports 4 to 32 bits and 1
to 8 channels.

For examples:

https://xiph.org/flac/faq.html#general__samples
states:
    FLAC supports linear PCM samples with a
    resolution between 4 and 32 bits per sample.
    FLAC does not support floating point
    samples.

https://xiph.org/flac/format.html#metadata_block_streaminfo
states:
    FLAC supports from 4 to 32 bits per sample.
    Currently the reference encoder and
    decoders only support up to 24 bits per
    sample.
