Seems to be a low-traffic list, and by defifnition, open to everyone. I 
suggest
it is especially welcome anyone who think !... duh.

I looked at VHDL in Wikki - sounds like a very promising idea, but I 
ask what is
the level of expertise of your students and what has been studied already.

The one comment I was able to find suggests that this is a multi-term,  team
project. Time may get into research grade work, breaking new ground in
established codebase.
