I sent a patch improving this function to the old mailing list on
6 Feb 2003 18:33:40 +0100, subject "bitbuffer optimizations". I
don't know if it is still possible to apply the patch to the current
code (I have written my own decoder for my limited purposes), but at
least you can give it a try.
