[Flac-dev] Making an official MIME type for FLAC?

Hi all,

I'm new to FLAC, and even newer to this list. I'm
pretty excited about the format, though.

I was wondering if there was any work being done, or
any interest at all, in officially registering a MIME
type for FLAC with the IETF. (The details on the
registration process can be found at
ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2048.txt)

Obviously something like "audio/flac" would be the
coolest way to go. :-) But registering that would
require some work--namely, writing up an RFC that
covers the definition of the FLAC format, and having
it peer-reviewed by the IETF. One other downside I
can see is that modifications to the spec would have
to go through the same peer-review process that the
original registration goes through. But it would be a
nice feather in FLAC's cap that I think would
demonstrate its commitment to open standards.

Alternatively, a MIME type could be registered in the
"personal tree" (e.g. "audio/prs.flac"), which doesn't
require any peer review process.

If there is interest in pursuing the first route, I'd
be willing to volunteer to put things in the proper
form for the IETF (unless someone else out there has
prior experience with this sort of thing).

Thoughts, comments...?
