This version seems to work at least partially on ia64.  I am able to encode my
usual test WAV file now, but I still get a segfault during the self-tests.

By the by, do you want me to start sending patches to the sourceforge patch
tracker, or is it easier for you if I just send them here?  Some SF folks seem
to prefer the patch tracker tool.
