  configure cleanups:
  
  call libtoolize to avoid the ltconfig warning
  
  don't call autoheader since we're not using config.h
  
  remove superfluous AC_SUBST(CC) and AC_PROG_RANLIB()
  
  .cvsignore updates for the autogenerated/installed files
